چکیده

Oceanic gas hydrates have been measured near the seafloor for the first time using a seagoing Raman spectrometer at Hydrate Ridge, Oregon, where extensive layers of hydrates have been found to occur near the seafloor. All of the hydrates analyzed were liberated from the upper meter of the sediment column near active gas venting sites in water depths of 770– 780 m. Hydrate properties, such as structure and composition, were measured with significantly less disturbance to the sample than would be realized with core recovery. The natural hydrates measured were sI, with methane as the predominant guest component, and minor/trace amounts of hydrogen sulfide present in three of the twelve samples measured. Methane large-tosmall cage occupancy ratios of the hydrates varied from 1.01 to 1.30, in good agreement with measurements of laboratory synthesized and recovered natural hydrates. Although the samples visually appeared to be solid, varying quantities of free methane gas were detected, indicating the possible presence of occluded gas in a hydrate bubble fabric. 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Raman spectroscopic measurements of synthetic gas hydrates in the ocean

A Raman spectrometer extensively modified for deep ocean use was used to measure synthetic hydrates formed in an ocean environment. This was the first time hydrates formed in the ocean have been measured in situ using Raman spectroscopy. Gas hydrates were formed in situ in the Monterey Bay by pressurizing a Pyrex cell with various gas mixtures. Raman spectra were obtained for sI methane hydrate...

Spectroscopic identification, thermodynamic stability and molecular composition of hydrogen and 1,4-dioxane binary clathrate hydrate

We present the spectroscopic identification of the binary hydrogen and 1,4-dioxane clathrate hydrates in which H2 molecules are encapsulated in small cages of the structure II hydrate framework. X-ray diffraction, solid-state NMR and Raman spectroscopy were used to confirm the mixed hydrate structure and more importantly the occupancy pattern of hydrogen in clathrate cages. The corresponding pr...

Cage Occupancy of Hydrogen in Carbon Dioxide, Ethane, Cyclopropane, and Propane Hydrates

We have already reported the cage unoccupancy of hydrogen in the CO2 hydrate from the Raman spectroscopic analysis and the thermodynamic analysis using Soave Redlich Kwong equation of state. On the other hand, at the low temperatures, Kim and Lee (Journal of American Chemical Society, vol. 127, pp. 9996-9997, Jul. 2005) claimed that hydrogen is enclathrated in the CO2 hydrate. In the present st...

Changes in structure and preferential cage occupancy of ethane hydrate and ethane-methane mixed gas hydrate under high pressure

Structural changes and preferential cage occupancies were examined for ethane hydrate and ethane-methane mixed gas hydrates with five compositions in a pressure range of 0.2 to 2.8 GPa at room temperature. X-ray diffractometry and Raman spectroscopy showed the following structural changes. The initial structure, structure I (sI), of ethane hydrate was retained up to 2.1 GPa without any structur...

Methane hydrate rock physics models for the Blake Outer Ridge

Seismic analyses of methane hydrate data from the Blake Outer Ridge indicate high Pwave velocity and anomalously low S-wave velocity in sediments containing methane hydrates. In an attempt to explain this observed P-wave and S-wave velocity structure at the transition from gas to hydrates, the effect of different hydrate models on elastic moduli and velocities are explored. After construction o...
